1989–90 Stoke City F.C. season
The 1989–90 season was Stoke's 90th season of league football and the 30th in the Second Division.
Overview
Mick Mills was under huge pressure to finally deliver promotion in the 1989–90 season and Mills spent a hefty amount of money to bring in a number of new players. Stoke started the season with a 1–1 draw with West Ham as Stoke made an awful start to the season as they only managed to register a two wins in 19 games. This saw Stoke bottom of the table and heading to the Third Division and thus Mills pain the price and was fired in November. Into Mill's place came former World Cup winner and former Portsmouth manager Alan Ball, Jr.. Ball brought in more players to try to avoid the drop as Stoke used 38 players throughout the season. Ball's gamble did not pay off as Stoke remained bottom of the table and went in to the Third tier of English football for the first time since 1927.
